Goodbye to the Headclutcher

Stephen Fry President of Mind

Launch of a new campaign to say ‘goodbye to the headclutcher’ by Time to Change.

Images are an extremely powerful way of telling a story and the photos that accompany articles in the media have a great impact. Whether the story is about recovery, treatment or scientific research, a picture of someone with their head in their hands – or the ‘headclutcher’ as we’ve come to know it – is often used alongside it. Most of the time this is not the best way to portray a story about mental health, but picture editors have told us they’re stuck for alternatives.

With the backing of Mind’s President Stephen Fry, we’re launching the ‘Get the Picture‘ campaign, which builds on the action taken by many mental health activists, as well as feedback from a recent survey of nearly 2000 people who said they feel the ‘headclutcher’ image is stigmatising.

The campaign will offer picture editors a wide selection of new images, to provide alternatives to the ‘headclutcher’ and other stigmatising images out there. Some images include people with experience of mental health problems, like Clare:

“I’m looking forward to seeing the outcome of our day. I hope that the shots will help to provide a better representation of the vast diversity that surrounds mental health challenges.”

Hear their stories and why they decided to get involved with the campaign.

InSIGhts Self Injury Group (Newcastle area)

inSIGhts

A group for those who have lived experience of self-harm or self-injury. This includes a range of issues, ranging from cutting, to skin-picking, to hair-pulling and other behaviours. Run by and for service users and those who have self-harmed, it offers a supportive environment in which to share experiences, coping techniques, and the opportunity to talk to others.

It is not a clinical service, but a peer support and self-help group aimed at those for whom existing services don’t quite meet all their needs, and it works to complement, not to replace professional medical help.

Awakenings North East

Awakenings North East

Awakenings North East was founded by Jim Fergus and started in 2004, this was following discussions with other service users, who do not have many opportunities to become involved in groups outside of normal hours.

The Awakenings North East group was put together to give an opportunity to help people suffering from mental Health difficulties, to get together and take part in social activities during the year.

Initially the group meets once a month and plays Ten Pin Bowling, and finishes with a coffee and bite to eat and a chat.

Also planned are day trips 2 or 3 times a year (eg Alnwick Gardens) and now from 2013 the group is now in a position to expand and has started to incorporate other activities as listed opposite, and hopefully attract new members.

All activities have been funded, so you will only have to pay for your travel to any venue.

The committee work hard all year round to keep the project running, applying for funding grants, and looking for new members.

Recyke y’Bike (Bike Recycling)

recyke y'bike recycling

Recyke y’Bike is a social enterprise and charity that has been around since 2006, accepting donated bikes from members of the public for purpose of recycling them. They are then fixed up by our great team of trained mechanics and volunteers for resale.

Most of the bikes are sold to the public to raise funds for running costs and to pay our staff but we also fund-raise in order to send around 500 sturdy bikes a year to development projects in Kenya and The Gambia.

We give away around 150 bikes a year in the North East. These go to schools, to community groups, and to refugees and asylum seekers in Tyneside.

Recyke y’Bike is certain that providing affordable, roadworthy transport is a good way to encourage more people to get cycling, as well as making sure that bicycles don’t end up in land-fill sites, when instead they could be put to good use.

For more information about recycling your bike or getting involved, please visit their website.
