Mind Campaign – your experiences of mental health inpatient care

Thank you so much to everyone who took the time to share your experiences of mental health inpatient care. We know that talking about this subject can be difficult but we really appreciate you being so open.

Each story we heard was different. Some of you have had good experiences of inpatient care. Sofia told us about how she was treated by staff. ‘They helped me shower, blow dried my hair and plaited it, they encouraged me to eat, sat with me when I needed a cry, and made me laugh when I needed it most’.

But unfortunately, this has not been the same for everyone. Many of you were not treated in the way you should have been, and this needs to change.

When we asked what you think the UK government should do to ensure access to safe therapeutic care, you gave lots of great ideas.

Good inpatient care, according to Emily ‘should include plenty of access to different forms of group and individual therapy, practice in life skills and access to group activities.’ Anne said the government needs to ‘return to funding it effectively including increasing the funding every year by more than inflation’. One of you told us that the government needs to ‘make mental health care accessible 24/7 and staff the NHS properly with well-trained, well-paid employees, who are cared for so they are able to look after patients better.’

We also asked what you think people need most when they are in mental health inpatient care. You said that there needs to be compassion, care and respect. But what was said most, is that there needs to be understanding.

Together, we hope to make the UK government understand the need for change.

Thank you for working with us on this campaign so far. We will be in touch again soon with more ways to get involved.

Take care,

Sorsha

YoungMinds Newsletter – March 2023

Welcome to your March YoungMinds e-newsletter! It shouldn’t take more than five minutes to enjoy all this month’s stories.

We’ve appointed a new Chief Executive!

We’re incredibly excited to announce that Laura Bunt will be joining us as our new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at the end of this month. Laura is currently at Public Digital, a digital consultancy, having previously been Deputy Chief Executive at With You, a charity for people experiencing issues with alcohol, drugs or their mental health. Laura is also a trustee at Samaritans, a charity who provide support for anyone struggling to cope.

YoungMinds trustees and young people from across our programmes led the recruitment process for our new CEO. It was vital that young people had a voice in this process, given that they are at the heart of everything we do. It was equally important to ensure that our new CEO shared our values, vision and commitment to Anti-Racism, Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion. We believe we’ve found all that in Laura!

Invite your MP to our event in Parliament this March

Last month we told you how the Government broke their promise of a ten-year Mental Health Plan in favour of the ‘Major Conditions Strategy’ – a new plan that wraps mental health up with other conditions like cancer and Alzheimer’s disease instead of focusing on mental health in its entirety. This month, we’re here to help you channel your frustration into action. On March 20th, we’re hosting a Young People’s Lobby in Parliament – bringing young people, MPs and other decision makers together to #EndTheWait for better mental health support. We’ve booked the room. We’ve written the invite to MPs. Now we just need you to send it. Will you spare just two minutes to invite your local MP to our event?

Already sent your invite? Spread the word and let’s get more MPs in the room!⬇️

LGBT+ History Month

However you identify, we’re here to celebrate you. And fight for your mental health. That’s why we’re marking LGBT+ History Month.

It’s a month when we can all remember the people who fought for LGBTQIA+ rights in the past and how far we’ve come over the years. A chance for people of all ages to learn more about the rich history of LGBTQIA+ communities.

Being LGBTQIA+ does not cause mental health problems. But some things you may go through as an LGBTQIA+ person can make you more likely to experience a mental health problem.

If you’re finding things tough, please remember you’re not alone. We have information, tips and support for you on our website.
